A Compact Urban Home in Wellington
Nestled within a an inner-city plot, this home is designed to embrace the constraints of its small urban landscape which has been divided off from the main house. At just 6 by 6 meters, it is one of a series of small homes we have completed that offer both simplicity and ingenuity. Perfect for those seeking efficient, space-saving designs, this home celebrates small-scale urban architecture
The design features an internal courtyard that offers complete privacy from nearby walkways, while still allowing a balanced amount of natural sunlight and daylight into the interior. The courtyard is equipped with adjustable timber screens, which can be opened partially or fully, creating an array of different moods and views over the valley below.
Inside, the home contains: a kitchen and dining room, a living area, a main bedroom that stretches toward the stars through a wide skylight, a secondary room that may serve as an office or guest retreat, and a bathroom that whispers of both function and comfort. Each corner is a testament to thoughtful design, where every inch and detail has a use.

On a tiny section with a tree-lined outlook, this delightful project is both functional and playful. Each space is defined by a 3x3 grid, yet the home is full of surprises. Thoughtfully prioritized spaces include a full walk-in wardrobe, a private sun-drenched courtyard, and separate kitchen, living, and sleeping areas. The stained weatherboards are adorned with slim scribed battens and copper soaker flashings, elevating the exterior like jewels. A bedroom with a view of the stars, a hidden bathtub, and a joyful colour palette make the home feel abundant, proving that small can also be generous and beautiful.
